About the role
As a Kaitohutohu Hapori Māori Advisor you will provide strategic advice and expertise on building capacity, leadership and undertaking meaningful engagement within Māori communities and to identify strategic partnerships that can contribute positively to addressing social equity, access and inclusion while respecting the intent of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
To achieve this, you will:
- Increase capabilities and strengthen hapu and marae emergency response planning and preparedness.
- Ensure there is a strong level of trust and respect developed with all stakeholders but with particular emphasis on creating opportunities for better council / Iwi/hapu relationships.
- Provide support to the wider Community Development team by facilitating connection with Māori communities to achieve collaborative outcomes across all priority communities.
- Ensure there is high awareness of emerging trends and issues affecting communities locally, nationally and internationally, so that Council is well informed on the priorities and needs of specific communities.
What you'll need to succeed
Your experience as a Kaitohutohu Hapori Māori Advisor means that you'll bring:
- Tertiary qualification in community development, social policy or related discipline.
- At least 5 years' practical experience in a similar role and in community development and/or emergency management processes.
- Knowledge of the Treaty of Waitangi, Tikanga Māori and its implications for community development.
- Proficient in Te Reo Māori.
- Extensive experience with internal and external relationship management, in particular the ability to network and build relationships with Māori, government agencies and community groups.
- A proactive individual, happy to seize the initiative and who is comfortable communicating in a public / community forum.
- Sound ability producing accurate written reports.
- Full driver's license (Class 1).
