The Emergency Management Specialist (Mitigation) is responsible for developing and implementing mitigation plans and projects to reduce the risk of disasters. The position requires knowledge of disaster risk reduction principles and practices, as well as experience in project management and community engagement. This position assess program needs and coordinates and delivers training related to disaster mitigation.
This position falls within the emergency management career ladder which establishes criteria for initial pay and pay increases, based on experience in all aspects of the profession.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement mitigation plans and projects to reduce the risk of disasters.
- Conduct risk assessments and identify hazards.
- Develop strategies to mitigate hazards.
- Work with local communities to develop mitigation plans.
- Manage mitigation projects from start to finish.
- Ensure compliance with federal regulations.
- Research new methods, resources, techniques, and strategies with emergency planning and management.
- Provide technical assistance to local and tribal stakeholders in the development and management of Hazard Mitigation Grants.
- Provide support to the State Emergency Coordination Center as needed.

- Bachelor’s degree in emergency management, public administration, or a related field.
- Four years of experience in emergency management or disaster risk reduction.
- Knowledge of disaster risk reduction principles and practices.
- Experience in project management and community engagement.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with diverse audiences.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to occasionally travel within the state and occasionally outside the state.
A combination of education and experience will be considered.
